"This is a very modest campaign finance reform bill, which I believe the public will endorse"
- Rep. Stoltze
(JUNEAU) - Today, Representative Bill Stoltze (R-Chugiak/Mat-Su) introduced legislation to prevent certain groups from using funds to influence the outcome of a ballot proposition. HB 160 closes a loophole that exists in current law.
Alaska statutes prevent the State of Alaska, the University of Alaska, municipalities, school districts, and other political subdivisions of the state from using funds to influence the outcome of an election for state or municipal office. HB 160 will add that those funds cannot be used to influence the outcome of a ballot proposition. In addition, it will allow the Division of Elections and municipal election officials to provide only information that is already approved in statute for election pamphlets.
"This is a very modest campaign finance reform bill, which I believe the public will endorse," said Representative Stoltze.
The bill was referred to the House Community and Regional Affairs Committee.
