"The Palmer Elk's Rat Races have been a fixture at the Alaska State Fair for over 50 years. This is a great tradition, and an even more important fundraiser for numerous valley charities."
- Rep. Stoltze
(JUNEAU) - The Alaska State Senate passed HB 366, an act to allow the continuation of animal classic charitable gaming events, which includes the Palmer Elks Lodge "rat races", in the state. The bill, sponsored by Representative Bill Stoltze (R-Chugiak/Mat-Su), passed the floor by a vote of 19-0.
The legislation was crafted to allow animal classic charitable gaming events and permit them to continue, provided they were in operation prior to November 1, 2002. Over the years, charitable gaming events in Alaska have helped to provide funding for numerous non-profit organizations and are an integral part of many Alaskan communities.
Stoltze said, "I can remember visiting the Alaska State Fair and seeing the Palmer Elks Rat Races booth in the mid-sixties."
