"I am very concerned about the negative impact any change in mixing zone requirements will have on the health of Alaska's citizens and fisheries, and the ability for Alaska to promote and market its fish."
- Sen. Gary Stevens
(KODIAK)- Senator Gary Stevens (District R-Homer, Kodiak, Seward) is pleased the Alaska Department of Environmental Conversation (DEC) is extending the deadline for public comments on a proposal to allow mixing zones in lakes, streams and rivers where salmon and other fish lay eggs from September 10 to November 1, 2004.
Mixing zones are areas of fresh water designated as flushing tanks for waste from sewage plants and other pollution sources. During a public hearing on August 25, Senator Stevens asked the department to extend the public comment period to give those involved in the summer fisheries time to add their input. Stevens also advised DEC to consider the negative ramifications of easing mixing zone restrictions in salmon spawning zones.
"I am very concerned about the negative impact any change in mixing zone requirements will have on the health of Alaska's citizens and fisheries, and the ability for Alaska to promote and market its fish," Senator Stevens commented. "I am urging DEC to be the leader in protective measures and to proceed with great caution as they consider these changes."
