"Very few Alaskans will have the colorful legacy that Governor Hammond leaves behind. He guided a young state through some of its most trying times with his thoughtful leadership."
- Sen. Ben Stevens
(ANCHORAGE) – House Speaker John Harris (R-Valdez) and Senate President Ben Stevens (R-Anchorage) spoke of the contributions of the late Governor Jay Hammond.
"As Governor, Jay Hammond spent many years advocating for Alaska's rights. He promoted the welfare of Alaska's most vulnerable citizens, while striving to find the balance between the economy, ecology and environment in our state. Since leaving office, he has continued to play a prominent role in politics and has made invaluable contributions through his work with the Permanent Fund. As long as we continue to protect the permanent fund dividend, the legacy of Jay Hammond will live on. He has left an indelible mark on this state," said Speaker Harris.
Senate President Stevens said Gov. Hammond was one of a handful of people who shaped Alaska. "Very few Alaskans will have the colorful legacy that Governor Hammond leaves behind. He guided a young state through some of its most trying times with his thoughtful leadership. Even after leaving public office Alaskans both in and out of politics sought out his advice on a wide range of issues affecting our state he will be missed."
