(Fairbanks) - Members of the Alaska Legislature will be meeting in Fairbanks on August 22nd & 23rd to hear presentations and discuss resource issues of importance to the Interior. During the joint Committee meetings of the Senate and House Resources Committees and the House Special Committee on Oil and Gas legislators will be reviewing the latest information on both mining and natural gas.
Beginning at 1:00 Monday afternoon, Committee members will center their attention on mining with presentations by Fort Knox, Teck-Pogo and the Alaska Miners Association.
"We are very interested in an update from Fort Knox and details on development leading to production at Tech-Pogo," said Representative Jay Ramras (R-Fairbanks), Co-Chair of the House Resources Committee. "I understand that Pogo could be pouring as early as March, which means they should be gearing up their hiring operations."
Tuesday morning, beginning at 9:00, the session will be devoted to the latest development in the Nenana Basin, with several presentations by the partners involved in the natural gas project. Representative Ramras said, "If the Nenana Project works out we could see an abundance of natural gas in the Fairbanks' market long before North Slope gas would be available."
He went on to say, "The afternoon portion of the meeting will be on gasifying Fairbanks. Its not going to be as easy or inexpensive as some people might think. Homeowners and small businesspersons converting to natural gas from oil will have immediate costs. Residents need to be aware of these costs and that it is not as easy as just turning on a switch. All of the sessions are open to the public and I hope people will show up to learn more about the opportunities that Fairbanks may soon be seeing in the form of family wage jobs and cheaper energy costs."
All three sessions will be held in the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly Chambers, 809 Pioneer Road.
