" I have know Ruth all of my life as have many fellow Fairbanks' residents. She was instrumental in developing the idea of a fish hatchery in Fairbanks, and worked with her former boss Senator Ted Stevens to secure federal funding for the project."
- Rep. Ramras
(JUNEAU) A bill introduced by Representative Jay Ramras (R-Fairbanks) to name the Fairbanks Fish Hatchery after former Mayor Ruth Burnett is making its way through the House of Representatives. Today, HB 256 cleared both the House Special Committee on Fisheries and the House Resources Committee on its way to the House Floor.
"I have know Ruth all of my life as have many fellow Fairbanks' residents. She was instrumental in developing the idea of a fish hatchery in Fairbanks, and worked with her former boss Senator Ted Stevens to secure federal funding for the project." Ramras said. "Everyone in the Interior delegation agrees that a fish hatchery is important for the Interior. We also agree that that naming the facility after this great lady is only fitting."
Other legislation is being considered in both houses to determine how to fund construction of the fish hatchery. HB 256 does not address that issue and only establishes a name for the facility once it is in operational. "I look forward to attending the dedication ceremony for the Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery in Fairbanks in the next few years," Ramras added.
HB 256 is waiting to be scheduled on the House Floor.
