"Legislative Update"
June 15, 2000

News You Can Use

Dear District 18 Residents:

I hope you are enjoying your summer so far. I am writing today to keep you up to date on what I have been doing for District 18 since session ended in May and to pass on some useful information.

I have been busy with writing my summer newsletter, meeting with constituents, and attending Hillside 6th & 8th grade graduation ceremonies.

The newsletter should be in the mail by tomorrow. Included are the results of my survey, and information about results-based budgeting, the capital and operating budgets, and the bills I sponsored and supported. If you have any questions or comments about anything in the newsletter, please get in touch with me. I will not be sending the newsletter through these Legislative Updates, as it is formatted in PageMaker, a program that many of you may not use. However, I have put a copy on my website, http://www.akrepublicans.org/pastlegs/Bunde.htm.

The controversy over Department of Education Commissioner Rick Cross's announcement that standards for the high school exit exam will be low for the first two years has also been occupying my time. I find it ironic that while I was congratulating Hillside children on their hard work and achievements, Commissioner Cross was deciding that Alaska's students are not being well prepared to graduate from high school. Judging from the young people I met on May 31st and June 1st, I believe Commissioner Cross is underestimating Alaska's teachers, parents, and students. I have faith in their ability to meet and exceed high standards.

My Juneau office will be closed from July 3-28 while my Juneau staff person, Karen McCarthy, is back east for her husband's surgery. Please call Patti Swenson, my staff person in Anchorage, at 269-0181 during that time if you need to reach me.

On June 22, from 10:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. there will be a Legislative Ethics Committee meeting at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office. The meeting will be open to the public. If you would like more information, you can call Susie Barnett, Professional Staff Member for the Ethics Committee, at 260-0150.

For those of you considering a weekend getaway down towards Seward, you should know that the Department of Transportation has instituted a 55-mph speed zone from Potter Marsh to Bird Flats. DoT has put up more speed limit signs, and the Troopers are enforcing them. So be aware of the change, drive safely and have a good time!

I will be sending out Legislative Updates periodically throughout the summer. As always, if you need to contact me, you can: e-mail me at representative_con_bunde@legis.state.ak.us, call my Anchorage L.I.O. office at 269-0181, or call my Juneau office at 1-800-892-4843 (except in July).

Have a good weekend!

Con
