Governor Takes Action on Significant Bills

Juneau Governor Tony Knowles today signed into law six more significant pieces of legislation sponsored by House Majority members.
House Bill 458, sponsored by the House Labor and Commerce Committee, which establishes a golf course alcoholic beverage license to allow sales of beer and wine and extends the termination date of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.
House Bill 482, sponsored by the House Transportation Committee. Current law says senior citizens and handicapped Alaskans may register one vehicle free-of-charge. HB 482 would allow seniors and handicapped drivers to register one vehicle free for their lifetime, eliminating nearly twenty thousand transactions annually.

Bill 471, sponsored by the House Community and Regional
Affairs. HB 471 allows an increase in the number of board
commissioners on a regional native housing authority to more than
five members. It also allows an involuntarily dissolved Native
village to reinstate the corporation through December 31, 1998.

would allow flat-rate auto mechanics statewide to work Under
current law, the process for figuring out a flat-rate
mechanics overtime is so complicated, shops dont
allow overtime for fear of being sued for incorrectly calculating
amounts and hours.
