Representative Brian Porter Named House Speaker
Republicans to Lead Majority Once Again
For Immediate Release: November 7, 1998 Contact: Rep. Brian Porter at (907) 269-0155
Anchorage -- The incoming House Majority, in its first action, Saturday named Representative Brian Porter (R-Anchorage) to be Speaker of the House for the 21st Legislature.
"I want to express my gratitude to my colleagues for their confidence in me," said Porter, an Anchorage businessman and former Anchorage Police Chief. "I look forward to working with the new House Leadership and with my colleagues in the House," Porter said. "But, I want to assure Alaskans that the Republican-led Majority's Committment to Alaska will continue unabated."
"We recognize the awesome task facing this Legislature because of the largely unanticipated reductions in oil production and price we now face. Our commitment to work toward elimination of the fiscal gap will continue despite these disappointing developments," Porter said. "We will continue to work toward a smaller, smarter state government, and we will continue our commitment to the people of Alaska and, especially, to Alaska's children, to do all we can to make Alaska a safer, healthier place to live," Porter said.
