Representative Porter
Receives NFIB Guardian Award Statue
February 1997
The National Federation of Independent Business Alaska Guardian Advisory Council members selected state Rep. Brian Porter as the sole recipient of the 1996 Guardian of Small Business Award statue.
To qualify for a Guardian statue, a legislator must have an excellent NFIB voting record and take a leadership role in getting priority legislation passed or defeated. Rep. Porter more than qualified in both arenas. In addition to his 100 percent voting record in favor of NFIB positions for the last two years, he was the sponsor of the tort reform bill.
Rep. Porter worked tirelessly for two years to get the tort reform legislation through the House and Senate. Unfortunately, the bill was ultimately vetoed by the Governor. However, tort reform will be back on the legislative priority list for the 20th Legislature, and he will again be a key player.
Rep. Porter was elected to the Legislature in 1992, 1994, and won election again in November 1996. He has served as Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee for the last four years and has been chosen to be a member of the Republican leadership next year as the House Majority Leader.
He has lived in Alaska for 45 years and served as a police officer and chief of police from 1960 to 1987. He was president and general manager of Alaska Security, Inc. from 1989-91 before being elected to serve as a state legislator.
Please take the opportunity to send Rep. Porter a note to thank him for his past and continued support of issues important to the small-business community.
