Anchorage -- Alaska Legislative leaders today mourned the death of Lieutenant General David J. McCloud. Lt. Gen. McCloud died July 26th while piloting his private airplane over Fort Richardson. A friend. Lewis Cathro of Alexandria, Virginia, was also killed in the crash.

"General McCloud was the sort of person whom this Great Land of ours seems to draw like a magnet," said House Speaker Gail Phillips. "He was a unique leader, of the sort who touched everyone with whom he came into contact," Phillips said.

"General McCloud leaves some big shoes to fill along with a legacy of hard work, solid accomplishment, and dedication to duty," said Senate President Mike Miller. "His time in Alaska was too short, but he left an indelible mark, nonetheless," Miller said.

Lt. Gen. McCloud was 53. He leaves his widow, Anna and two children: Scott and Robyn.
