Juneau -- In order to base Alaska's budget on realistic revenue projections and to assess the extent of the downward shift in the price of oil, the Senate and House Finance Committees have invited two well-respected experts to share their views at a teleconferenced Joint Meeting of the two committees.

Members of the Legislature, Administration, and public are invited to attend this bi-partisan educational forum with Peter Bogin, from the Cambridge Energy Research Associates, and Douglas M. MacIntyre from the U.S. Department of Energy. Mr. Bogin and Mr. MacIntyre last year, during the Legislature's ground-breaking Revenue Summit, provided the first concrete evidence that oil prices were heading down and were expected to be relatively low for the foreseeable future.

"Mr. Bogin and Mr. MacIntyre gave Alaskans a reality check on our future revenue forecasts when they were here last year," said Senator Sean Parnell, Co-Chair of the Senate Finance Committee. "Now that we are acting on what they told us it is vital that we gather as much information as possible about current world oil market trends, so that we can plan our state budget with Alaska's fiscal reality in mind."

"The days when Alaska can spend seemingly unlimited amounts of money are gone now," said Representative Eldon Mulder, Co-Chair of the House Finance Committee. "We are, even now, crafting a budget that we hope will give us the "biggest bang for the buck" possible, so future generations of Alaskans may inherit a more stable, efficient, and less costly state government."

The Joint Meeting of the Senate and House Finance Committees will be held in the Senate Finance Committee Room 532 in the State Capitol beginning at 8:30 am Tuesday, March 23.
