For Immediate Release: May 6, 1999 Juneau -- A measure making it easier and more efficient to administer insurance to those in the high-risk pool has been sent to Governor Tony Knowles for his signature. The State House Thursday approved Senate Bill 48, sponsored by Senator Jerry Mackie (R-Craig). The Comprehensive Health Insurance Association (CHIA) provides insurance to Alaska residents who are considered high-risks by most insurance companies. Mackie said these individuals typically suffer the most severe health conditions and face insurmountable costs for medical treatment and care. "This bill streamlines costs and makes CHIA more effective so that Alaskans who are uninsurable because of current health conditions will continue to be able to receive health insurance at a reasonable rate," said Mackie. The Alaska Legislature created CHIA in 1992 to provide health insurance for Alaskans whose health condition is considered uninsurable or who cannot otherwise find adequate health coverage. All health insurance providers in the state are required to participate in a pool to provide insurance for these "high-risk" individuals. SB 48 is one of many measures sponsored by the Republican-led Majority to streamline government and make state programs more efficient. SB 48 now goes to the governor for his signature before becoming law.
