Eliminates Tourism Marketing Council - Trade Association Would Promote Alaska
For Immediate Release: May 6, 1999 Juneau -- The Alaska State House approved dismantling the Alaska Tourism Marketing Council and replacing it with a qualified trade association that would promote the state's tourism industry. Senate Bill 107, sponsored by Senator Jerry Mackie (R-Craig), also requires the tourism industry to pay more of the costs of promoting the industry. "I believe that this will provide a great opportunity for the tourism industry to be involved in the marketing of the visitor industry. It's also proper that the industry be involved in contributing toward the marketing effort," said Mackie. "I'm pleased with the support we've had from the industry for this legislation," he said. "I believe SB 107 is a step in the right direction. It's a major challenge for the tourism industry, but I do believe that they will be willing to step up to the plate and build a successful marketing program for the State of Alaska," Mackie said. SB 107 is one of many bills introduced by the Republican-led Majority to restructure and streamline state government through the privatization and consolidation of state programs and services. SB 107 now goes to the governor's office for his signature before becoming law.
