Three Senate Measures Go to Governor for Signature
For Immediate Release: May 11, 1999
Juneau -- Three Senate bills were approved by the House and now go to the governor for his signature before becoming law. In addition, several measures were approved by the Senate and will be sent to the House for consideration.
The following Senate bills were approved by the House and now go to the Governor for his signature before becoming law:
SB 93: Names of Organizations and Businesses
Sponsored by the Senate Labor and Commerce Committee. SB 93, which concerns
the naming of businesses and organizations, was approved 27-12.

SB 98: Teacher Tenure
Sponsored by Senator Lyda Green (R-Mat-Su Valley). SB 98 changes the window of
time a school district has for evaluating tenured teachers new to the district.
SB 98 gives the district sufficient time to evaluate the teacher and enhances
the teacher's opportunity for tenured employment. SB 98 was approved by the
House 34-5, but a notice of reconsideration was filed.

SJR 21: Amchitka Island Nuclear Test Site Workers
Sponsored by Senate Labor and Commerce Committee. SJR 21 is designed to provide
benefits to civilian workers and families on Amchitka Island who were exposed
to nuclear radiation. Amchitka Island was the site of the largest underground
nuclear testing ever conducted by the United States. The House in a unanimous
vote approved SJR 21.

SB 32: Capital Budget Appropriations
Sponsored by the Senate Rules Committee at the request of the Governor. SB 32
is the Senate's Capital Budget for Fiscal Year 00. The measure was approved 15-5,
but a notice of reconsideration was given.

SB 155: Salary Reports Legislative, Executive, Judicial Branch
Sponsored by the Senate Rules Committee at request of Legislative Council.
SB 155 concerns payments and reports for certain state salaries and business
expenses. The measure was approved 18-2, but a notice of reconsideration was given.

SB 171: Fishery Data, McNeil River Refuge
Sponsored by Senator Rick Halford (R-Chugiak). SB 171 concerns the release of
certain fisheries related records and reports required by the Alaska Department
of Fish and Game. It also deals with the transfer of land within the McNeil
River State Game Refuge and McNeil River State Game Sanctuary. The measure
was approved unanimously, but a notice of reconsideration was given.
