Alaska’s Agriculture Industry Honors Senator Lyda Green for her Support

Wasilla -- Senator Lyda Green (R-Mat-Su) was recently presented a certificate of appreciation for her continued support of the agricultural industry in Alaska. The award was presented to Senator Green by Gary Stewart from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks during the Second Annual Agriculture Appreciation Day held at the Palmer Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station on Saturday August 1^st.

Green is an ongoing supporter of the University's Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and the Alaska Cooperative Extension. It was also Senator Green who initiated this very successful Agriculture Appreciation Day one year ago and has also championed legislation supporting Alaska agriculture.

"Word needs to get out that Alaska's agricultural industry is one of the great gems in this state," said Green. "We need to find ways of encouraging our agricultural activities and helping the industry to prosper."

Green said the activities at the Agriculture Appreciation Day event were educational as well as fun. " I hope some of the youth who attended the event will be motivated to pursue a career in agriculture and that those already in agriculture will be encouraged by the event’s enthusiastic crowd."

Approximately 1800 people of all ages participated in the events complete with a free barbecue of Alaska Grown products. Green managed to walk away with a third place award in the goat-milking contest, which drew a crowd of fascinated onlookers. Petting zoos, toy tractor rides, a kids' potato pulling event, and sheep dog driving demonstrations were just some of the attractions. Plans are already being discussed for next year's event.
