Representative Con Bunde Named "Legislator of Year"

Juneau - Representative Con Bunde (R-18) will be honored as "Legislator of the Year," by the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse on Friday, Feb. 20 in Juneau.

The award recognizes Representative Bunde's unstinting efforts to win passage last session of legislation raising Alaska's tobacco tax to $1 per pack on cigarettes, and to an equivalent level on other tobacco products. The law took effect in October, 1997.

"The tobacco tax is a good tool for discouraging Alaska's young people from starting smoking, and for having adult smokers pay more of the costs all Alaskans have been paying for tobacco-related health care," according to Representative Bunde.

The award ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. in the Hickel Room at Centennial Hall, 101 Egan Drive. Representative Bunde will be available for interviews at that time.

A Republican in his third term representing South Anchorage and the Hillside, Representative Bunde serves as chairman of the House Health, Education and Social Services Committee.
