Accomplishments

Budget Reform

Continuing to Implement the Five-Year Plan:
  • The Republican-led Majority reached its Five Year Goal by reducing spending $250 million resulting in a smaller fiscal gap.
  • This Five Year Plan, implemented in 1996, was accomplished by reducing the size of state government - less spending, lower taxes, narrowing the state's fiscal gap, increasing revenues through continued economic and resource development, and protecting both the Permanent Fund and the Constitutional Budget Reserve Fund.
Upholding Victim's Right:
  • Our Fiscal Year 2000 budget increases funding for the Violent Crimes Compensation Board, to help compensate crime victims for the financial and emotional damage caused by violent crimes.
  • The FY 00 budget also increases funding for the Victims for Justice, a non-profit advocacy group, by $100,000 in additional revenue over the FY '99 authorized spending period.
  • The FY 00 budget provided for more state troopers and more prosecutors.
  • The FY 00 budget added $3.1 million for juvenile detention centers, including new facilities in Palmer and Ketchikan, and expansion of the Anchorage and Bethel facilities.
