Sponsor Statement for SJR 1 Urging the United States Congress to remove Land and Water Conservation Fund restrictions on Alaskaland, formerly known as Pioneer Memorial Park.
In 1966 the Land and Water Conservation Fund granted $400,000 to Alaskaland, formerly known as Pioneer Memorial Park, in order to further develop the park and its public outdoor recreational uses. Upon receiving the funds, the park became obligated to have any proposed changes approved by the Secretary of Interior. Senate Joint Resolution 1 urges the United States Congress to remove the Land and Water Conservation Fund restrictions imposed in 1966. Although the intent of the money was followed when the park was created, its uses have expanded to include not only outdoor recreation and historical/cultural preservation, but also commercial ventures, non-profit and borough facilities. Alaskaland is currently maintained by the borough, and the removal of the restrictions empowers the borough to continue to develop the public park, without the requirement of federal approval for every change. # # # Attachments:
