Sponsor Statement for SCR 22 Relating to declaring March 2002 as Sobriety Awareness Month.
Alcohol and drug abuse has been identified as the single most destructive health problem in Alaska. Its devastating effects have been felt within every racial, ethnic and economic background. Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 22 reinforces the commitment Alaskans make to a clean and healthy life style. SCR 22 will help to: 1) Highlight and reinforce socially appropriate behaviors and choices that improve quality of life and health of individuals, families, and communities, 2) Reduce the incidence of alcohol and drug related crime and 3) Reduce the burden on government in having to expend valuable resources to pay for the problems caused by alcohol and drugs. SCR 22 follows conventional wisdom to focus on sobriety as a solution being embraced by thousands of Alaskans. # # # Attachments: Attachments:
