(JUNEAU) - Sen. Robin Taylor (R-Wrangell) introduced legislation on Wednesday that would make it easier for municipalities to improve their ports and harbors.

Senate Bill 111 would authorize the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to pay for the construction and renovation of a number of port and harbor facilities around the state. Revenue bonds would then be issued to repay the state.

The following communities would benefit from the appropriations:

  • $7,876,000 -- Ketchikan
  • $3,729,000 -- Petersburg
  • $4,469,000 -- Sitka
  • $3,492,000 -- Wrangell
  • $896,000 -- Klawock
  • $2,628,000 -- Seldovia
  • $2,449,000 -- Whittier
  • $3,212,500 -- Valdez
  • $4,876,000 -- Cordova
  • $1,000,000 -- Nome

"This bill would give communities what amounts to 'home-improvement loans' to make necessary repairs to their ports and harbors," said Taylor. "It doesn't require them to bond the money up-front, and it expedites the rebuilding of their facilities."
