House Fixes School Debt Bill Error
(JUNEAU) -- The House unanimously passed House Bill 90 today, correcting a technical error in a major school capital funding and bond debt reimbursement measure passed by the Legislature in 2000. The Alaska Legislature passed HB 281 last year to provide nearly $78 million to reimburse municipalities a portion of the cost of school construction or repair bonds that had already been approved by voters, said Rep. Eldon Mulder, sponsor of HB 90 and co-chair of the House Finance Committee. Some school districts, including those in Anchorage and the Northwest Arctic Borough, had approved bonds before HB 281 passed, and it later became clear that the bill failed to include specific language needed to allow those districts to be reimbursed. "House Bill 90 makes a technical change to correct that inadvertent oversight, and is simply a correction of what we thought we had approved last year," Mulder said. The bill carries no new costs to the state. HB 90 moves next to the Senate for consideration. # # # Attachments:
