Committee to Take Up School Regulations
(JUNEAU) - The Administrative Regulation Review Committee (ARRC) will solicit public testimony on proposed new state regulations for correspondence schools, at a meeting on Wednesday, March 20, committee Chair Rep. Lesil McGuire (R-Anchorage) announced today. "We have received a lot of written comment on the proposed regulations, and on March 20 we hope to hear from individuals and school districts about their concerns, and then ask those actually teaching their children at home about the current program," McGuire said. "This will give us an opportunity to closely evaluate what the Department has told us needs to be changed and compare it with the information being provided to us by the home schooling community." McGuire noted that she had hoped the committee could take testimony at its March 1 meeting, but that was not possible, as the Department needed extra time to review the complicated regulations in preparation for the hearing. At the March 1 meeting the Department did agree to delay its final review and implementation of the proposed regulations, originally scheduled for the state Board of Education's meeting in April, until the board's summer meeting. The postponement will give those people actually using the program additional time to comment, and also give the Department an opportunity to revise the proposals to better meet the needs of both sides, McGuire said. The ARRC meeting will be held at 8:30 am on March 20, in Room 102 of the State Capitol. It will be teleconferenced in major communities statewide and there will be a limited amount of lines for people to call toll-free if a Legislative Information Office is not located nearby. # # # Attachments:
