22nd Alaska State Legislature
Scholarships Available for Future Leaders
(JUNEAU) - Rep. Lesil McGuire (R-Anchorage) announced today that Alaskans seeking advanced degrees in political science or related fields could be eligible for one of four $2,500 scholarships offered to students nationwide.
The scholarships, coordinated by the Women's Network of the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL), will be awarded to students planning to enter graduate school this fall in political science, public administration, public policy or a related field.
Qualified students will be selected based on a variety of factors including scholastic achievements, written statements by the applicant, community and school involvement and letters of recommendation, McGuire said.
"This program offers students interested in pursuing advanced studies in the public policy arena an outstanding financial opportunity," said McGuire. "This as a perfect example of how government and the private sector can work together to improve the quality and effectiveness of government service."
"While many organizations sponsor scholarships, only a very few are available to those seeking public employment, and this program provides an opportunity to those who truly believe that by working in the public sector they can make a difference," she added.
Students interested in applying for the scholarships should contact the primary underwriters office as soon as possible by calling the Sprint Corporation at (800) 796-3464. Applications must be submitted by June 29, 2001. This year's recipients will be announced during the August annual conference of the NCSL in San Antonio, Texas.
