Leman Bill Improves Underground Tank Program
(JUNEAU) - Senate Bill 153 by Sen. Loren Leman (R-Anchorage), which changes the program to clean up underground fuel storage tanks, passed the House Tuesday by a vote of 39-0. The bill phases out grant programs for owner/operators of underground storage tanks and creates a revolving loan fund, continuing a successful environmental protection program while saving state dollars. “Senate Bill 153 is what Alaskans expect of government—it makes it more efficient,” Leman said. Responding to an Environmental Protection Agency mandate, during the past decade the state has provided funds for upgrades of underground storage tanks and cleanup of spills. Gas station owners, schools, Civil Air Patrol and municipalities have all participated. More than $49 million has been appropriated since 1991. “We’ve completed the upgrade and closure requirements of Federal law. SB 153 now focuses state and private efforts on fuel cleanups to protect our water quality,” Leman said. Senate Bill 153 now goes to the Governor for his signature. # # # Attachments:
