Veterans' Highway Bill Passes Legislature
(JUNEAU) -- The Alaska State Legislature gave final passage today to a bill sponsored by Rep. Pete Kott (R-Eagle River) to designate a major thoroughfare as the “Eagle River Veterans’ Memorial Highway.” House Bill 79 adds a concurrent designation to the portion of Eagle River Loop Road between Eagle River Road and the Anchorage Regional Landfill as the “Eagle River Veterans' Memorial Highway.” It passed the house with no opposing votes on Feb. 5, and passed the Senate today by a vote of 20-0. “Americans owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women whose hard work and sacrifice, sometimes ultimate sacrifice, helps us preserve our freedoms,” said Kott, a retired U.S. Air Force captain with 22 years of service. “If we can help Alaskans keep the memory of that sacrifice fresh by renaming a major highway n their honor, then we are helping in some small measure to repay that debt.” The “Veterans’ Memorial” designation will exist concurrently with the roadway’s existing name, and will be noted on signs erected alongside the highway. HB 79 now advances to the governor, whose signature would pass it into law. # # # Attachments:
