Rep. Jeannette James Joins White House in Discussion on Repeal of ''Death Tax''
(JUNEAU) - House Majority Leader Jeannette James (R-North Pole) was invited to a discussion with White House officials and Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) for her efforts to eliminate the Estate and Generation-transfer Skipping Tax, commonly known as the "death tax." In January, James sponsored House Joint Resolution 35 calling on Alaska's congressional delegation to "support, work to pass, and vote for" a permanent repeal of the death tax. The resolution passed the Alaska House in early February by a sizeable majority, and was then referred to the Senate. HJR 35 is currently in the Senate State Affairs committee, chaired by Sen. Gene Therriault (R-North Pole), and is scheduled for a hearing on Thursday, March 21. "As a tax and accounting professional I've seen how harmful this tax can be to family inheritors of these estates," Rep. James said. "I believe it is very important for the Alaska State Legislature to weigh in on this issue." Robert Funk, a spokesperson for ATR said, "Eliminating the death tax is the first step in providing Americans with a comprehensive tax relief plan. The efforts of Rep. James. along with those of numerous other state legislative leaders throughout the country, are key to making that happen." Also participating in the call were ATR director Grover Norquist, South Dakota State Rep. Matt McCaulley, and officials from the White House offices of Intergovernmental and Political Affairs. Americans for Tax Reform is a think-tank and grassroots activist organization headed by Norquist, a conservative commentator, and is based in Washington, D.C. # # # Attachments:
