Alaska Senate First to Join Pledge Fight
(Juneau) - Within hours of news breaking Wednesday that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals had deemed the "Pledge of Allegiance" unconstitutional because of the nearly half-century old phrase "under God," the Alaska State Senate drafted and passed Senate Resolution 301 calling for the reversal of that decision. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Alaska is the first state they know of to take official action in standing against this ruling. "The Alaska Senate stands in concurrence with and in support of the United States Senate in challenging this horrible decision," said Sen. Lyda Green (R-Mat-Su) the prime sponsor of the unanimously passed resolution. "What's next - ruling apple pie and baseball unconstitutional?" Alaskans as a whole have been in an uproar since news broke about this decision, many commenting on the time frame of the courts actions to the close proximity to Independence Day and while the terror attacks in New York and Washington D.C. last year are still so fresh in everybody's minds. "The tragic events last year has brought this country together with a sense of unity not felt or shared in a long time," said Green. "I find it very distasteful that two San Francisco judges are dictating to the western part of this country that it is ok to stand united under our flag, as long as we don't pledge that unity in school." # # # Attachments:
