Austerman Urges Public Comment
(JUNEAU)-The face of Alaska may change dramatically due to population shifts shown by the 2000 census results. Political districts will be reconfigured based on the decisions of the Alaska Redistricting Board. The Alaska Redistricting Board will hold a statewide call-in teleconference hearing on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, to solicit public comment on the redrawing of election districts. "The 2000 census data has been released, and the board must prepare a draft plan or plans within 30 days from the date of release," said Alan Austerman (R-Kodiak/Southeast Islands). "Before the board considers alternative redistricting plans, it wants information, ideas and advice from the public." The Board will not have a draft plan to present to the public. The 2000 census for existing house districts may be viewed on the board's website: www.alaskaredistricting.org. "Persons wanting to listen or testify via teleconference from a Legislative Information Office should contact that LIO office prior to the meeting date," Austerman said. "We will have to live with these decisions for the next ten years." Those that are not in an area served by an LIO, may call 888-263-1555 to comment. The board encourages written testimony, which may be submitted by FAX to (907) 465-5094 or mailed to: Alaska Redistricting Board, State Capitol, Room 3, Juneau, Alaska 99801-1182 or e-mail to: board@alaskaredistricting.org. The board members will listen to testimony from the board conference room at 410 Willoughby St., Suite 105 in Juneau. # # # Attachments:
