Legislative Update 11-19-01
Dear District 18 Residents: In the November 14th issue of the Anchorage Daily News, I was misquoted as saying, "The ultimate hammer for a school not being successful is public embarrassment." Several people who were concerned about this "quote" have contacted me, and I wanted to let you all know what I have told them. During the "Legislative Forum: Success for All Students" last Tuesday, I asked a national expert on education whether a school designator system had actually worked anywhere in the U.S. I asked, because my own research had not found any situation in which a state takeover of a local school had actually improved the school. I then said that because such systems had not shown to be effective tools for school improvement, the result was that the "ultimate hammer was just public embarrassment". You might be interested to know that Alaska's school designator legislation was proposed and supported by the Governor and did not come from any committee I chair or serve on.
