Legislative Update 11-05-02
Check Fuel Storage Tanks After Earthquake

Released: November 5, 2002
Contact: Representative Con Bunde at (907) 269-0181 or (800) 892-4843

Dear Neighbors:

I received the following Public Service Advisory from the Department of Environmental Conservation and I want to share it with those of you who are using fuel storage tanks.

As always, please contact me if you have questions, concerns, or suggestions about these or any other topics.

Inspect Fuel Tanks After Earthquakes

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) is advising property owners affected by the earthquake to inspect all fuel tanks (above and below ground) and fuel storage drums for damage.

The earthquake could have severely damaged tank supports resulting in an unstable platform. Above and below ground tanks, including propane tanks, may shift or fall from the stand, causing fuel lines to kink or weaken, or there may be loosened or damaged fittings and filters.

If you have any questions on the integrity of your tank, fuel lines, tank stand, the fuel, or need assistance in moving or returning the tank to service, please contact your fuel supplier.

Operators of storage tanks should check for damage to foundations, pipes, valves, joints, sumps, and fittings and make repairs as necessary.

To report a fuel, oil, or hazardous substance spill, call ADEC at (907) 269-3063 or (800) 478-9300 (outside normal business hours).

For more information, contact John Brown at (907) 269-7688.
