Released: October 24, 2002
Contact: Representative Con Bunde at (907) 269-0181 or (800) 892-4843

Dear Neighbors:

I received the following information from the Anchorage School District and from the Federation of Community Councils. I wanted to be sure you are aware of this chance to participate in an important opportunity to gain information and provide public comment about our area's schools.

Even if your children are grown, or if you have no children, your participation in making our schools more effective and efficient is valuable. I encourage you to either attend one of the public meetings or send your comments to Carol Comeau, Anchorage School District Superintendent, at the address below.

District Seeks Community Input
on Programs, Budget and Audit

The Anchorage School District will hold a series of community meetings over the next several weeks to gather public comment on a variety of education issues and the school district budget.

During the meetings, the district will provide information on:

  • The recent curriculum audit,
  • The federal No Child Left Behind education act,
  • Student test scores,
  • Budget forecast for the 2003-2004 school year, and
  • A status report on school renovations and construction.

School officials will then take public comment on any education issues, but are particularly seeking input in the following areas:

  • Are there more economical and efficient ways to deliver district programs and services?
  • Are there programs or services that should be expanded?
  • Are there programs or services that should be reduced or eliminated?

The meetings are scheduled for:

  • Thursday, Oct. 24 - 7 p.m. - East High School commons
  • Tuesday, Oct. 29 - 7 p.m. - Chugiak High School auditorium
  • Wednesday, Oct. 30 - 7 p.m. - Service High School little theater
  • Wednesday, Nov. 13 - 7 p.m. - Girdwood K-8 School multipurpose room

Citizens can also submit comments to Carol Comeau, Anchorage School District Superintendent, through the online suggestion box on the district's Web site (www.asdk12.org/aboutasd/suggestions/).

If you have questions about these meetings or any of the topics that will be discussed, please contact the Anchorage School District at 742-4312.
