An important bill introduced this month, SB385, was on a fast track in the Senate. The bill combines the divisions of Emergency Services and Homeland Security in the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs into a single Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. After a committee hearing in Senate HESS, it was on its way to the Senate floor.
In an uncommon procedure, I made a request to the Senate President to pull SB385 off the Senate calender and give the bill a referral to the Senate Judiciary Committee for an additional hearing. The Committee made some improvements to the bill in Senate Judiciary and it was then referred to the Senate body for a vote.
During the debate in the full Senate, I added express language in the form of an amendment to put into law the intent of protecting our cherished rights to keep and bear arms. The amendment was approved by the Senate 17 to 2. The bill is now in the House for more consideration. The press release is attached for more detail on the bill.
Sincerely,
Scott Ogan
