"It's abuse when you take property from one owner because you don't like how the property is being used and give it to another private owner simply because it can increase the tax base."
- Rep. Lynn
(Anchorage) - A private property rights bill was pre-filed this week in the Alaska State Legislative Clerk's Office by Representative Bob Lynn (R-Anchorage).
The bill is in response to a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on eminent domain. "This is a sort of Robin Hood in reverse," said Representative Lynn. "Eminent Domain has a proper place for public use, but it shouldn't be abused."
According to Representative Lynn, "It's abuse when you take property from one owner because you don't like how the property is being used and give it to another private owner simply because it can increase the tax base."
The bill will be taken up by the Legislature when it convenes in January.
