"If a show of support from the Alaska Legislature will help digital development in our state, we give it our blessing..."
- Rep. Kott

(JUNEAU) - Members of the Alaska Legislature participated in a forum about a resource that the state has yet to fully develop: Information. The Information Technology (IT) Subcommittee of the Legislative Council met Friday to discuss the significant role IT can play in Alaska's economy. William Ahearn from MIT; Jason Ohler, Ph.D. from University of Alaska; and H.A. "Red" Boucher, former Lt. Governor and president of Alaska Wireless Technology, Inc. made brief presentations. After discussion, House Speaker Pete Kott (R-Eagle River) said he is convinced IT can revitalize Alaska's rural communities and add one more industry in which Alaska can play a critical role nationally.

"We need to develop a digital strategy," Kott said. "We need to be ready for the opportunities that can come our way, and we need to encourage those opportunities." Kott stated that the development of digital services offers Alaska, and particularly rural Alaska, economic opportunities that could revitalize their communities. The Internet infrastructure could create new jobs in places that currently have some of the highest unemployment rates in the nation.

Dr. Ohler said that the Internet, wireless technology, and digital services could bring more employment and educational opportunities to both remote Alaska villages and urban areas, along with better participation in government, health care, and other vital services. Bill Ahearn from MIT's Media Lab offered the larger picture of developing Internet opportunities nationally and globally, and supported the efforts of Drs. Boucher and Ohler.

Dr. Boucher said that all the Legislature has to do is show support for digital ventures which will help the pursuit of grants and attract more business to Alaska. Speaker Kott said he welcomes any self-sustaining project that can provide more jobs for the state.

"If a show of support from the Alaska Legislature will help digital development in our state, we give it our blessing, Kott said. "We welcome new development and intend to participate in taking Alaska into the future of information. It is time for the state to provide leadership in this area."
