"The oil industry is Alaska's mainstay and the centerpiece of our economy."
- Rep. Kohring
(Juneau) - Representative Vic Kohring (R-Wasilla/Mat-Su), Chairman of the Legislature's Oil & Gas Committee, has expressed concern about the effect of proposed oil tax increases.
"The oil industry is Alaska's mainstay and the centerpiece of our economy," said Representative Kohring. He noted major tax increases pose a risk to future development, translating into less investment. Less investment means less exploration and production, and fewer dollars in the state's treasury for essentials such as roads, schools and public safety.
Representative Kohring is hopeful the legislation currently before lawmakers in Juneau will ultimately limit tax increases, while increasing incentives such as tax credits. "We cannot tax ourselves into prosperity as a state," said Representative Kohring.
