"... declaring October 18 as Alaska Territorial Guard Day gives us the opportunity to honor the men and women who volunteered and risked their lives defending Alaska and the nation"
- Sen. Huggins
(JUNEAU) - Sen. Charlie Huggins (R - Palmer) introduced legislation today designating October 18 of each year as Alaska Territorial Guard Day.
The Alaska Territorial Guard was created in 1942 to protect our state during World War II. Its 6,500 members were made up almost entirely of Alaska Natives.
Territorial Guard members proved themselves invaluable as scouts and guides patrolling Alaska's vast coastline to protect the state from further Japanese attacks.
The U.S. Army has now formally recognized the Territorial Guard members as veterans and the first Guard member became eligible for veteran's benefits on October 18, 2004.
"Though it has taken almost 60 years and only about 300 ATG veterans remain alive, declaring October 18 as Alaska Territorial Guard Day gives us the opportunity to honor the men and women who volunteered and risked their lives defending Alaska and the nation," said Sen. Huggins.
Alaska Territorial Guard Day will give communities and civic groups the opportunity to honor the guard with observances and ceremonies.
