"This is an important step forward in making our communities safer."
- Rep. Hawker
(JUNEAU) - HB 249, a bill relating to enhanced 911 (E-911) surcharges passed the Alaska State Senate today by a vote of 16 to3. The bill, sponsored by Representative Mike Hawker (R-Anchorage), would give municipalities the authority they need to raise sufficient revenue to implement and maintain E-911 systems in the state.
Utilizing E-911 service will save lives by decreasing the amount of response time when a person dials 911. Enhanced systems will tell an emergency services dispatcher the location and phone number of the caller. If a caller is unable to speak, the dispatcher will still be able to send help.
HB 249 balances the need to update our systems for increased public safety with prudent financial restraints. The maximum surcharge is set at $2 under HB 249. However, if that amount was not sufficient for a municipality to make the necessary changes, the cap could be exceeded by a public vote.
Representative Hawker said of the bill, "This is an important step forward in making our communities safer."
HB 249 now awaits the Governor's signature to become law.
