"As a former Captain with the Anchorage Fire Department, I am intimately familiar with the destruction that arson wreaks on the lives of its victims. Victims have the right to be compensated by the perpetrators of these crimes and I am pleased that my efforts will make that happen."
- Rep. Gatto

(JUNEAU) - The Alaska State Senate passed HB 350, changing current Alaska law to provide compensation to arson victims. Sponsored by Representative Carl Gatto (R-Palmer), HB 350 passed the Senate by a unanimous vote.

First-degree arson is a class A felony in the state of Alaska. However, arson is not currently on the list of class A felonies for which victims can receive compensation. This legislation changes that.

"As a former Captain with the Anchorage Fire Department, I am intimately familiar with the destruction that arson wreaks on the lives of its victims. Victims have the right to be compensated by the perpetrators of these crimes and I am pleased that my efforts will make that happen," Representative Gatto said.

HB 350 now awaits the Governor's signature.
