If you know a bright young high school student who will be graduating this year and who has an interest in government, politics, or public service, please
pass the following information on to them.
Senator Lisa Murkowski is seeking 20 young Alaskans to participate in her summer internship program in her D.C. office. There are two four-week
sessions to choose from. The first session runs from May 29 - June 26, 2004, and the second session runs from July 3 - July 31, 2004. The following
information comes from Senator Murkowski’s website:
Applicants must be on track to graduate from high school this spring, be able writers and have good communication skills.
Office activities include assisting the staff with daily assignments, attending hearings and committee business meetings, composing articles for the intern
newsletter, and accompanying Senator Murkowski during her daily routine.
Interns will gain insight into the workings of a Senate office and how the legislative process works.
Interns receive $350 per week and be housed in George Washington University's (GWU) dormitories. Interns are responsible for the cost of housing,
about $1000.00 per intern.
A number of tours and social events, including evening activities, a day at a local amusement park, and a weekend trip to the beach are all part of the
complete program.
The U.S. Senate internship program is not a government-funded program. Alaskan businesses and Alaskan individuals who are interested in supporting
Alaska's next generation cover all expenses, other than the interns’ salary.
Applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2004. As security screenings have significantly slowed mail delivery to Congressional offices, it is
recommended that applicants fax their application to (202) 224-5301 in addition to mailing it to ensure they are received in a timely manner.
More information about the program and the application can be found at http://murkowski.senate.gov/internship.html. Or call intern coordinators Bekki
Johannes and Ivette Fernandez at 202-224-6665.
