Books for the Troops!
In October, about 700 paratroopers of the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment "Geronimo" Task Force will
leave for a six-month deployment in Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom. The 1/501st is trained in highly
mobile and airborne assaults, and will reportedly replace elements of the 82nd Airborne Division, currently conducting force
protection and sweep patrols in search of Al Qaeda terrorists.
The regiment has a proud history – one of the first to jump into Normandy in 1944, they fought bravely during the Battle of
the Bulge and Operation Market Garden. The regiment also deployed to Vietnam from December 1967 through February
1972. While there, it participated in twelve campaigns and produced two Medal of Honor recipients.
One way you can show your support for these outstanding young Americans is by dropping off your donation of used, good
condition fiction and non-fiction paperback books at the Fort Richardson Post Library, Building 5, between October 3rd
and December 3rd. For more information, please call the Post Library at 384-1798 or the Fort Richardson Public Affairs
Office at 384-2074.
